Janice M. Mehnert MD

Janice M. Mehnert, MD, is a Professor with Tenure and Associate Director of Clinical Research at the Perlmutter Cancer Center of NYU Langone Health/NYU Grossman School of Medicine. She is also Director of Medical Oncology for Melanoma and Cutaneous Oncology. As a clinical and translational researcher, she has spent the last decade developing a practice focused on the expert care and consultation of patients with skin tumors, as well as the treatment of patients with all types of malignancies as part of early-phase clinical trials. She leads a translational research initiative with a robust portfolio of investigator-initiated, industry-sponsored, and cooperative group studies, and mentors junior faculty members from different disease specialties.

Mehnert also works with the Phase 1 Unit, where she enrolls patients to an open portfolio of more than 20 studies that include novel targeted therapies, immunotherapies, and first-in-human compounds, and has particular expertise in intratumoral injection and vaccination strategies. With the expansion of immune checkpoint inhibitors, she has led many early-phase trials aimed at developing these agents across multiple solid tumor types and has been part of “precision immuno-oncology” initiatives seeking to identify biomarkers that can guide patient selection for therapy in the future. She has achieved and maintained multi-year peer-reviewed funding and has a laboratory research interest in the abrogation of autophagy and promotion of apoptosis to improve therapeutic outcomes in cancer.
