dr. J. (Jan) Stolk is a lung specialist with a focus on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency (AATD). He completed his training as a pulmonologist at the Leiden University Medical Center in 1992, where he has been working as a staff member since that year. He obtained his doctorate from the University of Leiden, where his research was focused on the treatment of (hereditary) lung emphysema.
By continuously combining patient care and clinical scientific research around his theme of alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency (AATD), he aims to remain the point of contact for this hereditary disease in the Netherlands, for patients and doctors. The assessment and placement of bronchus valves for these patients have also been a focus area since May 2017. In addition to general day-to-day patient care, he has set up consultation hours with the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department to assess patients with paralysis of the diaphragm muscle (diaphragm). The options for surgical treatment are also discussed. Another collaboration with the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department concerns an operative treatment for patients with emphysema that aims to remove relatively bad lung tissue (reduction of lung volume) so that the remaining lung tissue can function better.
