Jan A. Staessen is an Emeritus Professor of Medicine at the University of Leuven, where he led the Research Unit Hypertension and Cardiovascular Epidemiology, Department of Cardiovascular Sciences. He was the former Head of the Clinic at the Division of Cardiology, University Hospitals at the University Hospitals Leuven. In addition, until 2014, he was a Professor of Genetic Epidemiology at the Department of Epidemiology, Maastricht University, The Netherlands.

In 2007, JA Staessen received the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the Jagiellonian University, Krakow, Poland (JU [P12]), one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Europe. He is an Honorary Professor at the Universidad de la Republica, Montevideo, Uruguay, and at Hospital Italiano, affiliated with the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. He is visiting professor at Lu He Hospital affiliated with the Capital Medical University, Beijing, China, and at the Shanghai Institute of Hypertension affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. He is an honorary member of the Czech, Polish, and Spanish Societies of Hypertension. He received an ERC Advanced Researcher Grant for population-based research on left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (EPLORE-294713) and a Proof-of-Concept Grant (uPROPHET-713601) applying EPLORE findings in heart transplant recipients. JA Staessen is currently affiliated with Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen and Mosaiques-Diagnostic GmbH, Hannover, Germany.
