Jan-Hendrik Egberts will take over the professorship for thoracic surgery at the Medical Faculty of the Christian-Albrechts-Universitat zu Kiel (CAU) from today (Wednesday, June 1st). In his teaching, he primarily wants to convey to students enthusiasm for the subject of surgery and to show them the possibilities and developments in surgery. In research, the surgeon's focus is primarily on oncology. We are looking for new therapeutic methods for cancer in the abdomen and in the chest organs, says Egberts. In doing so, we analyze whether inflammatory reactions may have an influence on cancer development and tumor growth. There is close cooperation here, in particular with the working group of Professor Susanne Sebens, Director of the Institute for Experimental Tumor Research, CAU.

Egberts began studying human medicine in 1995 at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster. In 1997 he moved to the CAU, where he received his doctorate in 2001. In 2009 he completed his habilitation in surgery with a habilitation thesis on the preclinical development of new therapeutic methods for gallbladder and pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Egberts is a specialist in visceral and thoracic surgery. Since 2013 he has been an adjunct professor at the Medical Faculty of the CAU and senior consultant at the Clinic for General Surgery, Visceral, Thoracic, Transplant, and Pediatric Surgery.
