Jan Fronek, MD, is a member of the Scripps Clinic division of orthopedics and head of sports medicine, a section dedicated to the evaluation and treatment of sports-related injuries. His expertise includes arthroscopic surgery, which uses a pencil-sized telescope to diagnose and treat knee, shoulder and other joint problems. This minimally invasive procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis, and frequently produces less pain and results in faster healing. Dr. Fronek treats a variety of injuries with arthroscopic surgery and open treatment, including meniscus and articular cartilage injuries; rotator cuff injuries; biceps tendon and glenoid labrum injuries; torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL); and dislocated shoulders. Other clinical interests include sports medicine and sports injuries, as well as laser and thermal surgery in orthopedics.

He provides care for a variety of professional athletes including the members of the San Diego Padres baseball team and, formerly, the U.S. Pro Ski Tour, and also treats amateur and recreational athletes. Regardless of the individual’s background, his primary focus is to ensure a safe and speedy recovery. In order to enhance the outcomes of those in his care, he collaborates closely with sports therapists and athletic trainers. In addition to his clinical practice, he conducts research in arthroscopic surgery techniques and outcomes. Dr. Fronek is also a member of the California State Orthopaedic Association, the Association of Major League Baseball Team Physicians and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
