Professor Baumbach (b. 1979) researches in the field of bioinformatics and systems biomedicine. His laboratory develops algorithms and machine learning processes which can be used to extract information from massive molecular biological data sets in order to provide insight into how living cells develop and how molecular mechanisms trigger diseases. A core aim of Professor Baumbach's research is to develop personalized, computer-assisted therapeutic approaches. He uses a number of various approaches from modern computer science, ranging from database technologies to big data analytics.

Professor Baumbach studied Computer Science in the Natural Sciences at Bielefeld University, Germany, where he also received his PhD degree while working at the Center for Biotechnology. After two years as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, USA, and three years as an associate junior professor at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics in Saarbrücken, Germany, he was appointed Professor of Computational BioMedicine at the University of Southern Denmark, where he worked until 2017. Professor Baumbach has held the chair of Experimental Bioinformatics at TUM since 2018.
