Professor of Intensive Care with a research appointment at Erasmus MC. Clinically active in New York (NYU Langone Health and Columbia University Medical Center). Studied medicine at the University of Amsterdam. Trained as an internist and intensivist in Hilversum, Brussels, Utrecht, and Apeldoorn. Started as an Intensivist at Gelre Hospital Apeldoorn, after which head of IC Isala Zwolle. In 2004 professor of Intensive Care at the newly started Intensive Care Department for Adults. Accepted appointments in New York and Santiago after about 10 years.

Ph.D. on research into optimizing circulation in patients with a severe infection at Utrecht University in collaboration with the Universite Libre de Bruxelles.
