Jamil Azzi, MD, is a transplant nephrologist and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Azzi also is the Program Director of the BWH Transplant Medicine Fellowship Program. A major focus of Dr. Azzi’s research is to study cellular signaling pathways that determine the fate of the immune system. The goal is to use this knowledge to develop therapies to reeducate the immune system and prohibit it from attacking the allograft in transplant recipients and the pancreas in children with Type 1 diabetes. Dr. Azzi’s laboratory successfully developed new strategies to induce indefinite transplant survival using novel immunoproteasome inhibitors.
