Dr. Hutchison is a Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Toronto and a recognized international expert in Paediatric Neurocritical Care. He graduated from Medicine at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada in 1983. Following a Paediatrics Residency he completed his Royal College Paediatric Critical Care training at the University of Western Ontario in 1992 and completed research training in ‘The biophysics of microvascular dysfunction following ischemic brain injury’ with Drs. Frewen, Sibbald and Ellis at the Burton Vascular Laboratory in London, Ontario in 1993. Dr. Hutchison then worked as a Paediatric Intensivist at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), Ottawa and was Director of the Critical Care Unit at CHEO from 2000-2002.

Dr. Hutchison started work in the Department of Critical Care Medicine (CCM) at SickKids in the fall of 2002 and has a clinical, education and research focus of ‘Paediatric Neurocritical Care’. In addition to being the Research Director of the CCM Program, he runs a laboratory and clinical research program in brain injury and is a Senior Scientist in the Neuroscience and Mental Health Research Program at the SickKids Research Institute. He has published over 60 peer reviewed manuscripts, delivered over 120 invited lectures and is chair of the Canadian Critical Care Translational Biology Group and Canadian Traumatic Brain Injury Research and Clinical Network. His research has been funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Canadian Foundation for Innovation, Brain Canada, the National Institutes of Health, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, the Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation, the Victoria Neurotrauma Initiative, Physicians Services Incorporated and the Hospital for Sick Children Foundation.
