James Roy Winkler is a Professor at the University of Utah. He completed his Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Dental Surgery at the University at Buffalo. His Clinical Interests are Infection, Clinical Dentistry, Infectious Disease Epidemiology, Immunology of Infectious Diseases, Emerging Infectious Diseases, Dental Education, Periodontology, Infectious Disease Control and Prevention, and Implant Dentistry. For over 18 years, he was a Professor and the Chairman of Periodontology at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry. His areas of interest include the management of oral conditions in immune-compromised patients, HIV, dental implants, periodontal therapy, diabetes, the etiology and pathogenesis of the periodontal disease, and dental education. He is now focusing his research on HPV vaccination strategies and HPV oropharyngeal cancer. For over 30 years he has maintained private and faculty practices limited to periodontics and implantology.

Dr. Winkler is internationally recognized for his work on HIV and the oral manifestations seen in immune-compromised patients. He is a national and international lecturer on a broad range of topics including HIV, viral infections, whole body health, implants, periodontology, and infection control. He has conducted multiple hands-on simulations and cadaver-based training courses in periodontics and implantology for dentists and specialists from all over the world and has been involved in numerous clinical research projects. He has authored over 60 journal articles and textbook chapters. He was elected as a dental student to be a member of the OKU National Honor Dental Society.
