Dr. James Jakub is a high-volume surgical oncologist, with a primary focus on breast cancer and melanoma. Dr. Jakub has been an early adopter and championed the dissemination of a number of novel surgical innovations. He has been recognized by receiving the Mayo Clinic Innovation in Education Award and Outstanding Course Director for our Radioguided Breast Surgery course which has trained over 500 individuals; many of them in adopting this new procedure into clinical practice. He is a leader in disseminating the novel technique of minimally invasive inguinal lymph node dissection for melanoma, for which he leads a 12-site multi-institutional trial melanoma.

Dr. Jakub is currently PI on a prospective trial investigating the role of axillary reverse mapping and lymph-venous bypass at the time of axillary lymph node dissection with the goal of preventing one of the greatest fears patients have of the operation, lymphedema. He is actively exploring the role of robotic breast surgery as part of an FDA-approved trial. He is the course director for a new Mayo Clinic CME course Innovation, Disruptive Technologies and Early Adopters in Breast Cancer Care: Tomorrows Technologies Today as well as a co-course director for the highly successful Mayo Clinic Annual Practical Course in Dermoscopy & Update on Malignant Melanoma.
