James Palis, MD is a Director at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He received a medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Dr. Palis' aim is to elucidate the cellular and molecular events underlying the initiation of hematopoiesis in the mammalian embryo by investigating the ontogeny of unipotential and multipotential hematopoietic progenitors and their origin from hemangioblast precursors. The Palis lab has identified an embryonic erythroid precursor with extensive self-renewal properties. These studies will ultimately produce insights into the ontogeny, regulation and expansion of the hematopoietic system and lead to improved treatment of marrow failure syndromes and leukemias.
