James K. Rustad MD, FAPA

Dr. Rustad joined the Dartmouth faculty as a psychiatrist in the Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences Service at the White River Junction VA Medical Center in 2016. He is a Psychiatrist and Acting Co-Director of Mental Health Services at the Burlington Lakeside Community Based Outpatient Clinic and works on the Consultation-Liaison Service at the White River Junction VA Medical Center. He was awarded Fellowship in the Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry (ACLP) by the Fellowship and Awards Subcommittee and the ACLP Board of Directors reflecting recognition by peers of abilities, talents, and contributions to the profession of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry.

Dr. Rustad serves as a didactics lecturer, clinical supervisor, and psychodynamic psychotherapy supervisor for psychiatric residents in the Dartmouth-Hitchcock program. He was awarded the 2019 Teacher of the Year award by the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Department of Psychiatry in appreciation of his excellent teaching.

Dr. Rustad participated in the American Psychiatric Association 2019 Research Colloquium as a Junior Investigator with the potential to develop a research career in psychiatry. He presented a lecture and poster in Track 2: Treatment from Psychopharmacology and Psychotherapy to Neural Strategies for the Colloquium at the 2019 APA Annual Meeting in San Francisco, California. Dr. Rustad is the WRJ Site Principal Investigator for the VA-BRAVE study (a VA cooperative study comparing oral and injectable Buprenorphine for the treatment of Opioid Use Disorder).

Dr. Rustad has presented workshops at the American Psychiatric Association and Academy of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry annual meetings. He recently presented Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center Department of Psychiatry Grand Rounds on “Psychiatric Consultation for Diabetes Along the Continuum of Care.”
