Dr.James Douglas Johnston received his Doctorate of Medicine at St. George’s University School of Medicine, Grenada, West Indies, in 1987. He completed a fellowship in Internal Medicine in 1990 and a fellowship in Cardiovascular Diseases in 1993 at the State University of New York. An affable, patient-focused professional with an exceptional work ethic, Dr. Johnston joined KMH in 2007. He has extensive experience in echocardiography, nuclear technology, pacemaker/defibrillator implant, follow-up, and coronary and peripheral arterial interventional procedures. In addition to his role as a staff cardiologist at KMH, Dr. Johnston is also a staff cardiologist at The International Heart Institute and a Medical Consultant in diagnostic imaging with Digital Telehealth Inc., a state-of-the-art Canadian company that brings health services into remote regions of the world. Prior to joining KMH, Dr. Johnston served as a Clinical Assistant, Professor of Medicine, and Interventional Cardiologist at the Medical University of South Carolina and as President and founding partner of Hilton Head Heart, the 2nd largest Medicare provider in Beaufort County, South Carolina. He also served as Director of Cardiology, Medical Director, and Director of Interventional Cardiology at the Adult Cardiac Cath Lab in South Carolina. Dr. Johnston has acted as principal investigator and co-investigator for numerous research studies on coronary artery disease and has been published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
