Professor James Galloway is a Professor of Rheumatology and a leading researcher in the field of inflammatory autoimmune diseases. His work focuses on leveraging big data and data science approaches to understand disease mechanisms, treatment responses, and healthcare delivery. He leads a dynamic research group at King’s College London, comprising NIHR clinical lecturers, PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, research nurses, and trials coordinators. His research spans disease epidemiology, predictive modeling for health outcomes, and pharmacovigilance. As the methodology lead for a UK national audit program, he plays a key role in evaluating and improving the quality of care for people with rheumatic diseases.
Graduating in medicine from the University of Bristol in 2001, Professor Galloway initially trained in internal medicine before specialising in rheumatology. He completed his PhD at the University of Manchester, working with the British Society for Rheumatology Biologics Register, the largest real-world dataset at the time for studying biologic therapies. His postdoctoral experience includes working in early-phase clinical trials and earning a clinical trials certification before establishing his research group at King’s College London in 2012. Clinically, he has a strong interest in inflammatory arthritis and rare diseases, running multidisciplinary subspecialty clinics for sarcoidosis, IgG4-related disease, and VEXAS syndrome.
Beyond research, Professor Galloway is deeply involved in medical education, recently appointed as Senior Director for the GKT School of Medical Education at King’s College London, one of the UK’s largest medical schools. He has chaired national and international guidelines—including the UK DMARD guideline and the European EULAR guideline on infection screening—and serves as Deputy Editor of Rheumatology, one of the leading journals in the field.
