James Carville MD

Louisiana, American political consultant, author, media personality, and Democratic Party strategist who successfully managed the first presidential campaign (1991–92) of Democratic candidate Bill Clinton. He acquired the sobriquet “the Ragin’ Cajun” because of his feisty debating style and his Louisiana heritage.

Carville received a bachelor’s degree and a law degree from Louisiana State University. He began working as a campaign manager for Democratic candidates, achieving his first success with Robert P. Casey’s victory in the 1986 Pennsylvania gubernatorial race. Subsequent successes followed in the 1987 reelection bid of New Jersey Sen. Frank Lautenberg, the 1990 Georgia gubernatorial campaign of Zell Miller, and the 1991 landslide victory of Harris Wofford (who overcame a 40-point deficit in the polls) in Pennsylvania’s senatorial election.

Carville then managed Clinton’s successful presidential bid, winning the Campaign Manager of the Year award from the American Association of Political Consultants for his efforts. During the Clinton campaign Carville met his future wife Mary Matalin, who was serving as manager of Pres. George H.W. Bush’s reelection campaign; they married in 1993. As Carville’s fame spread, he retired from managing U.S. campaigns (though he did serve as an adviser in the 2008 U.S. presidential primary run of Hillary Rodham Clinton, the former U.S. senator and the wife of the former president) and shifted his attention to campaigns abroad. His most notable foreign campaign was that of Ehud Barak, who was elected prime minister of Israel in 1999.
