James Shayman M.D. is Professor of Internal Medicine and Pharmacology at the University of Michigan where he holds the Agnes C. and Frank D. MacKay Professorship in Medicine. A nephrologist by training, he is a physician scientist known for his work on sphingolipid biology and lysosomal storage disorders. He is credited with the discovery of discovery of eliglustat, the first approved stand-alone substrate reduction agent for Gaucher disease type 1.
His academic contributions have been recognized by election to the American Society for Clinical Investigation and American Association of Physicians, and as a Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology and American Heart Association. Dr. Shayman received his AB from Cornell University and MD from Washington University. He completed his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in nephrology at Barnes Hospital, St. Louis and post-doctoral training in pharmacology at Washington University.
