James A. Brink MD

James A. Brink, MD, who currently serves as professor and chair of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology at Yale University School of Medicine, has been named the new chief of the MGH Department of Radiology, effective Feb. 1. Brink will succeed radiologist-in-chief James H. Thrall, MD, who has been a vital part of the MGH family for the past 25 years.

Brink completed his residency and fellowship at the MGH in the late 1980s. Since that time, he has maintained close ties to many staff and has served as distinguished alumnus lecturer at several Radiology Department symposiums. “It’s an honour and privilege to return to MGH to work with the exceptionally talented individuals who fuel the department’s tremendous reputation in all of its missions,” Brink says.]

Brink earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering at Purdue University and his medical degree at Indiana University. He previously was an associate professor at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University School of Medicine, before accepting a position at Yale in 1997. There, Brink was promoted to professor in 2001, named interim chair in 2003, and then appointed the chair of the Yale Department of Diagnostic Radiology in 2006. While Brink has broad experience in medical imaging, including utilization and management of imaging resources, he has particular interest and expertise in issues related to the monitoring and control of medical radiation exposure. This interest most recently led him to serve as vice president of the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements, where he is responsible for radiation protection in medicine.
