Jacques Pouyssegur graduated from INSA, an Engineering School in Biochemistry of the University of Lyon, where he obtained his PhD in 1972. He spent two years as a post-doctoral scientist at the National Cancer Institute of NIH and established his own research group in 1980 at the CNRS Biochemistry Centre of the University of Nice. Jacques Pouyssegur has contributed to the development of the Institute of Signaling, Developmental Biology and Cancer Research, a CNRS Unit housing 14 Group Leaders at the University of Nice that he directed from 1997 to 2008.

Jacques Pouyssegur has previous experience in bacterial and somatic cell genetics, metabolism, Na+-H+ exchange, pH regulation, G protein-coupled receptors (thrombin & serotonin) and MAP kinase signaling in the context of growth control in mammalian cells. His group has been interested for the last 10 years in hypoxia signaling, related to angiogenesis, nutrient sensing and tumour metabolism. He is a member of EMBO, the French and European Academy of Science. He is presently the President of the International Advisory board of the National Cancer Institute and of the French Cancer Society.
