Jacques is an internationally prominent immunologist, Professor Banchereau has been Director of the Schering-Plough Laboratory for Immunology Research, Dardilly, France, was founding director of the Baylor Institute for Immunology Research in Dallas, Texas, and is now Director of Immunological Sciences at The Jackson Laboratory. In his new role, Banchereau is building on the historical base of immunological research at The Jackson Laboratory led by Nobel Laureate George Snell.

He is expanding the program across all three JAX campuses, covering areas of medical importance such as cancer immunobiology, autoimmunity and host response to infectious diseases. Professor Banchereau has made important contributions to human immunology through his studies on B and T lymphocytes, cytokines, and particularly dendritic cells. He was a pioneer in the use of DC-based vaccines for immunotherapy of cancer. The major theme of his work has been the application of basic immunology to clinical medicine.
