Dr. Jackie Grupp-Phelan was appointed chief of the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) at UCSF effective June 1, 2017. Dr. Grupp-Phelan will also serve as the Department of Emergency Medicine vice chair for Pediatric Emergency Medicine. Dr. Grupp-Phelan is currently the Richard Ruddy and Barbara Wriston-Ruddy Professor of Pediatrics and director of research of the Division of Emergency Medicine at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Dr. Grupp-Phelan has a long history of conducting mental health services research within the pediatric emergency department setting, playing an active role in the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN) where she is currently PI on a U01 grant funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) to study innovative suicide screening techniques utilizing thirteen PECARN sites.

Dr. Grupp-Phelan received her BA and MD from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. She completed her pediatric residency and emergency medicine fellowship training at Northwestern’s Lurie Children's Hospital. After working on the Navajo Reservation in Tuba City, Arizona, she then completed an Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Scholar research fellowship and MPH at the University of Washington. Dr. Grupp-Phelan will join UCSF after completing 19 years at Cincinnati Children's.
