Jacob Mikkelsen PhD

Jacob Giehm Mikkelsen is a professor in genetics and personalized medicine at the Department of Biomedicine, Aarhus University in Denmark. Jacob has >25 years of experience within genetic engineering and leads a research group with a particular focus on technology development for genome editing as well as gene and protein delivery to cells and tissues. Jacob is a retrovirologist of training, and his group pioneered the development of engineered retroviruses for the delivery of genome editing tool kits.

With a focus on lentiviral systems, his research team has engineered lentivirus-derived nanoparticles as carriers of gene correction tools for homology-directed repair as well as base and prime editing. Jacob is currently part of larger research centers focusing on the development of CRISPR gene therapies for immunodeficiency (PASCAL-MID/Genescure) and on innate cellular responses to viruses and virus-based delivery vehicles (CiViA). Jacob has trained more than 70 students and postdocs and has a special interest in talent development in research. From 2019 25, he served as a member of the Danish Council on Ethics appointed by the Danish Parliament.
