Jack Satsangi is Professor of Gastroenterology at the University of Edinburgh. As an MRC Training Fellow he produced the first evidence that Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are related polygenic disorders. His Edinburgh group are at the forefront of investigations into the genetics of Inflammatory Bowel disease and have been influential for their studies into gene-environment-phenotype associations; contributions include exploring the epigenetic effect of smoking. He is a key figure in the successful UK and international IBD genetics consortia and his clinical trials unit is playing an important role in evaluating new treatments for IBD.
