Jack L. Ferracane PhD

Dr. Ferracane is a professor and chair of restorative dentistry and division director of biomaterials and biomechanics at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Ore. He is a founding member of the Academy of Dental Materials and co-director of the NW PRECEDENT practice-based dental research network. His research interests are Developing new dental composite restorative materials with enhanced durability and clinical performance through the inclusion of novel monomer and filler systems, Probing the interaction between dental composites/adhesives and oral bacteria that leads to the formation and growth of biofilm at the interface between the dental restoration and tooth structure, ultimately leading to the development of secondary caries, Developing antimicrobial and remineralizing dental materials containing bioactive glass to enhance the durability and longevity of dental restorations, Conducting clinical research in dental practices through participation in regional and national dental practice-based research networks, Studying tooth, patient and external factors causing the initiation and progression of cracks in tooth structure, and evaluating enhanced methods for the diagnosis and risk assessment of tooth cracks.
