Dr. DeMarco received his undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University in 1978. After completing his medical degree at St. Louis University in 1982, he and his wife Bernice traveled west to the Bay Area. As his family grew to include two children, he completed his radiology residency at the Naval Hospital Oakland and his neuroradiology fellowship at UCSF in 1988. His love of MR and fascination with MR Angiography grew from those early days at UCSF. Dr. DeMarco also served his country, first as a General Medical Officer aboard the USS Kansas City and later as director of MR at the Navy's flagship west coast hospital in San Diego.

He also held a joint appointment at UCSD. In San Diego, Dr. DeMarco continued his research with MR Angiography publishing the first article demonstrating excellent correlation of MRA and DSA in depicting carotid stenosis using improved post processing techniques. This work was chosen as the Best Presentation the following year at the Eastern Neuroradiological Society meeting and given as the highlight presentation during the 1994 American Society of Neuroradiology meeting. He was also chosen as Best Teacher of the Year at UCSD in 1992.
