Dr. Irene Romera is a Family Medicine specialist. She earned her medical degree from Complutense University of Madrid, Spain, and completed her residency in Family Medicine at Ramón y Cajal University Hospital, in the same city in 2001. Afterwards, she worked as a Primary Care Physician in Madrid, in the public health system. In October 2013, she received her PhD at the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, Spain

In 2002, she joined Lilly Spain as a Clinical Research Physician. She has been working for several years as a clinical research physician in the primary care and neuroscience area where she has made significant contributions in the clinical research of mood and anxiety disorders. She has designed, developed, and implemented several multicentre clinical studies and clinical trials, conducted at national and international levels, in both psychiatric and primary care settings. Her work has involved the design and the leadership of an European multicentre randomized controlled trial in depression involving 10 European countries.

Since September 2012 she has been Senior Medical Advisor in the area of diabetes. Since then she has developed medical affairs activities like the support of marketing, access, and other functions and activities, the launch of new products in diabetes and cardiovascular areas (linagliptin, empagliflozin, dulaglutide, insulin), reinforcement of the relationship with key opinion leaders, development and publication of observational and RWE studies, development and implementation of educational activities and patient support programs, etc.

Dr. Romera has contributed to the scientific community with the publication of more than 25 scientific manuscripts in the field of diabetes, cardiovascular, and mood disorders, in international peer-reviewed journals.
