Irene Kuter, MD, DPhil, is a much sought-after breast cancer physician thanks to her decades of experience, her clinical acumen and her exceptional bedside manner. Early in her career, Dr. Kuter worked in a basic science laboratory with major projects focused on changes in the cell membrane in cancer and on interactions between cancer cells and their microenvironment. She went on to serve as the director of the Hematology-Oncology Fellowship Program, director of the Solid Tumor Clinic and director of the Inpatient Oncology Unit, where she developed a comprehensive oncology training program for residents and introduced collaborative interactions between physicians, nurses and social workers.
Dr. Kuter has served as the principal investigator for multiple clinical trials at Mass General, including those that led to the approval of two drugs now widely used to treat breast cancer, Herceptin® and Xeloda®. She also initiated a multicenter trial studying predictors of response to neoadjuvant endocrine therapy and served as the international coordinator for this global trial.
