Ioannis (John) Sotiropoulos is a young P.I. joined the “Aging and Dementia” research line at Neuroscience Research Domain which is coordinated by Professor Nuno Sousa, co-Director of School of Health and Life Sciences at University of Minho. Matching with the team research interests on stress role on brain function under normal and pathological conditions, his main research work in cellular and animal models targets towards the mechanistic understanding of stress and glucocorticoids (GC) actions on neuronal plasticity and function in association with stress-related pathologies characterized by neuronal atrophy and dysfunction as well as cognitive and emotional deficits.

He is a focuses on the detailed investigation of role of chronic stress on pathogenic pathways found in neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and their connection to another stress-related disorder, depression, towards the exploration of novel potential biological targets for preventative and curative intervention of these diseases. Applying various experimental approaches and technical tools including molecular, cellular, morpho- and ultrastructural, electrophysiological and behavioral analysis, John´s and colleagues work highlights novel molecules mediating the effects of stress on the neural substrates that regulate depressive- and anxiety-like behavior providing hints about the novel cellular mechanisms that may link stress with brain pathology.
