Ingrid Fleming (born in Northern Ireland) obtained her BSc (First Class, Combined Honours) in Biochemistry and Pharmacology at Aston University in England and her PhD at the Louis Pasteur University in Strasbourg, France. Prof. Fleming is currently Chair of the Institute for Vascular Signalling and her research focuses on the elucidation of signal transduction mechanisms in the vessel wall, in particular in the endothelium and on the generation of several “autacoids”; including nitric oxide (NO) and the so-called endothelium–derived hyperpolarizing factor (EDHF). Current projects are aimed at elucidating the role of cytochrome P450-derived lipid mediators in vascular homeostasis, angiogenesis and stem cell mobilisation, as well as the changes in platelet function associated with the development of type 2 diabetes. Ingrid Fleming is a member of the Excellence Cluster Cardio-Pulmonary Systems (ECCPS) steering committee and currently president of the European Vascular Biology Organisation.
