Ingmar Skoog MD

Dr. Ingmar Skoog is professor in psychiatry and director and co-founder of the Centre for Health and Ageing, AGECAP, at the University of Gothenburg. He is also leader of the Neuropsychiatric Epidemiology Unit (Epinep) at the Sahlgrenska Academy of the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Dr. Skoog has been involved in epidemiological research for more than three decades. He is currently leading the H70-studies – population studies on aging which have gone on since 1971. These longitudinal studies examine how psychosocial and biological factors interact to influence age-related changes in function and disorders, and include also a large sample of individuals above age 95. The main research interest has been on dementia and other mental disorders in the elderly.

Dr. Skoog is most known for his work on the relation between cardiovascular disorders and Alzheimer’s disease and depression, and was the first person to describe the association between previous hypertension and Alzheimer’s disease. Recent interests include how aging has changed during the last four decades (‘the new aging’), and which factors make people keep their capability into very old age.

Dr. Skoog was the first person outside North America who received the Zenith Fellows Award from the American Alzheimer’s Association. He was Secretary General of Vas-Cog 2002-2012, and advisor to the National Institute of Health (NIH)- NINDS’s review groups on Stroke Progress and Vascular Cognitive Impairment, as well as advisor and reviewer for DSM-5, the new classification system of mental disorders issued by the American Psychiatric Association.
