Dr. Ilan Schwartz, MD, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Duke University School of Medicine. He is also a clinician and researcher specializing in infectious diseases, with particular expertise in invasive fungal infections and infections affecting immunocompromised patients.
Dr. Schwartz serves as Medical Director of the Infectious Diseases Clinical Research Unit at Duke and is actively involved in clinical care, including transplant infectious disease consultation services. His research focuses on the epidemiology, diagnosis, and management of fungal infections such as histoplasmosis, aspergillosis, and mucormycosis, as well as broader global health and infectious disease challenges.
He earned his MD from the University of Manitoba and later completed a PhD at the University of Antwerp. His postgraduate training includes residency in internal medicine at Queen’s University and fellowship training in infectious diseases. Dr. Schwartz has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and contributed to international clinical guidelines, including work with major infectious disease organizations. He is a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the European Confederation of Medical Mycology, reflecting his contributions to advancing the field.
