Dr. Igor Bondarenko is an MD and Professor of General and Clinical Biochemistry working at Diagnostic Research Laboratory of the North West Russian Research Centre for Hygiene and Public Health in St. Petersburg, Russia. His laboratory is responsible for research in the development and quality assessment of laboratory diagnostic assays.

He has been studying pro-oxidant and anti-oxidant enzymes of the liver and blood in acute viral and experimental toxic hepatitis with the use of enzyme histochemistry and cytospectrophotometry of the liver, as well as haematological cytochemistry. In the context of the EU-supported joint research project, he was responsible for development of enzyme immunoassays for the serum xanthine oxidoreductase, its antibodies and xanthine oxidoreductase-containing circulating immune complexes as sensitive serological markers for the liver damage. During his fellowship at Parasitological Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (2008), he studied pathobiochemistry of experimental nematode and cestode infections. Besides doing pure laboratory research, Prof. Igor Bondarenko worked as a Consultant in Nutritional Biochemistry at a private clinic in Helsinki, Finland, and presently – at an out-patient centre in St. Petersburg, Russia. Prof. Igor Bondarenko is a member of the Board of Directors of the Council for Nutritional and Environmental Medicine (CONEM, Norway); a member of European Committee for Quality Assessment in Laboratory Medicine; a member of European Federation of Parasitologists; an Editorial Board member of two European and one US peer-reviewed academic journals. He is an author of over 60 research publications and a supervisor of 8 PhD dissertations.
