Ighovwerha Ofotokun MD, MSc

Igho is a Professor of Medicine at Emory University. He has devoted his entire career to translational research, the care of women living with HIV/AIDS, and mentoring early career investigators in patient-oriented research in women’s health. Following a BIRCWH Award under the mentorship of Dr. Claire Pomeroy at the University of Kentucky in 2002, he went on to receive an NIAID-supported K-23 Award. Building upon these mentored early career opportunities and a rich research environment at Emory University he successfully transitioned into independence, currently serving as the PI/co-PI of multiple NIH awards.

Dr. Wingood led the effort for the establishment of NIH-funded Women’s Interagency HIV Study (WIHS) at Emory. All of his research grants address research questions of clinical relevance to women living with HIV/AIDS. These projects have provided robust opportunities for mentoring and he has served as a mentor for over 20 trainees to date. Several of his mentees have received NIH funding. In recognition of his efforts in research and mentoring, he has received several mentoring awards including the Infectious Diseases Divisional Shanta Zimmer’s Mentoring Award in 2010, the HIV Medicine Association (HIVMA) National Research Award in 2013, and the Department of Medicine Shanthi V. Sitaraman Silver Pear Mentorship Award in 2014.
