Dr. Ichiro Yasuda started training in Internal Medicine at Gifu University Hospital. In 1992, he moved to the Second Teaching Hospital, Fujita Health University, for advanced training in gastroenterology. His main interests at that time were ERCP and Endoscopic Ultrasonography (EUS) and he learned these techniques under Professors Saburo Nakazawa, Kenji Yamao, and Kazuo Inui. After a year’s training, he returned to Gifu University and in 2002 received his PhD from Gifu University for his thesis titled “Can endoscopic papillary balloon dilation really preserve sphincter of Oddi function?” (published in Gut). Immediately after that, he moved to the world-renowned University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf, Hamburg, Germany, and spent a year there to learn the EUS-FNA technique under Professors Nib Soehendra and Stefan Seewald. After returning to Gifu University, he was promoted to assistant professor in 2004, lecturer in 2008, and associate professor in 2012. In 2014, he is due to take charge as professor and director of the Gastroenterology Department at Teikyo University Mizonokuchi Hospital. He is an ERCP and EUS expert, and has had more than 120 peer-reviewed papers published in English. He is also an associate editor of Digestive Endoscopy and Clinical Journal of Gastroenterology, and an editorial board member of World Journal of Gastroenterology and Endoscopic Ultrasound.
