Educated at Northumbria University is a Chartered Biologist and joined Glaxo in 1980 as Factory Bacteriologist at Barnard Castle. Prior to that worked as Medical Laboratory Scientific Officer within the UK Public Health Laboratory Service (now the Health Protection Agency). In GSK Ian has held a number of Production and Quality and roles (site and corporate) associated with Sterile Manufacturing and Validation. His current role is Head, Aseptic Strategy and Intelligence in Global Quality. His principal responsibility is the establishment of the Quality Standards for sterile manufacturing processes. External industry involvement has been through membership of Parenteral Drug Association (PDA) Aseptic Task Group and US Pharmaceutical Quality Research Institute (PQRI) Aseptic Task Group which was part of the team that helped FDA write the 2004 aseptic manufacturing cGMP guideline. More recently he has been involved with the development of Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Scientific Society
