Hugo E. Vargas, M.D., focuses his research on the prevention and improvement of liver damage with the aim of avoiding or curtailing the impact of cirrhosis. He conducts clinical trials that introduce techniques, devices, and pharmacological approaches to improve the lives of people with liver disease. Dr. Vargas has expertise in the development of current therapies for chronic hepatitis C.

He researches therapeutic approaches for the management of complications of portal hypertension such as ascites, variceal bleeding, and hepatic encephalopathy. Dr. Vargas works extensively in the management of liver complications as they pertain to individuals who receive liver transplantation or have conditions that cause cirrhosis. He also focuses on developing strategies for people with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (A1ATD)-related liver disease. A1ATD is a genetic disease that damages the liver. His research on A1ATD-related liver disease will include clinical trials and participation in national data collection with experts in pulmonary medicine.
