Howard Heit received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He completed an internship and residency in medicine at George Washington University Hospital, Washington, DC, and a residency in medicine as well as a fellowship in gastroenterology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Dr. Heit is an assistant clinical professor of medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine.

Board certified in internal medicine (diplomat) and gastroenterology (diplomat), Dr. Heit is also certified in addiction medicine (diplomat) by the American Board of Addiction Medicine, and is certified as a medical review officer (MRO). He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). Dr. Heit was instrumental in forming the Liaison Committee on Pain and Addiction of the ASAM, the American Academy of Pain Medicine (AAPM), and the American Pain Society (APS).
