Dr. Howard David Pomeranz attended both the College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in the Medical Scientist Training Program (MD-PhD program) at Columbia University, New York. His Ph.D. studies were directed toward the embryological development of the nervous system of the gastrointestinal tract. He completed the Ophthalmology residency program at Washington University/Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, and then a fellowship in Neuro-Ophthalmology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.

Dr. Pomeranz began his academic career in Neuro-Ophthalmology in 1999 as an assistant professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, where he earned two consecutive faculty teaching awards in 2000 and 2001. He joined the University of Minnesota in July 2001 as an assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor. He is currently a professor at Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine on Long Island and a member of the Department of Ophthalmology at Northwell Health. He has a joint appointment in Ophthalmology and Neurology, and he is the director of Neuro-Ophthalmology. His research interests include the mechanisms of injury and treatment of ischemic optic neuropathy and other diseases of the optic nerve.
