Dr. Hossein Gharib is a Consultant Endocrinologist at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. Dr. Gharib holds a bachelor's degree from the Ohio State University. He received his medical degree from the University of Michigan and completed internal medicine residency training at the Mayo Clinic, where he also received advanced training through a fellowship program in endocrinology and metabolism. He then obtained fellowship training in reproductive endocrinology at Columbia University and joined the Mary Clinic faculty.

Dr. Gharib's seminal work in developing the first radioimmunoassay to measure triiodothyronine in human serum allowed further extensive studies on the mechanisms of thyroid hormones physiology and metabolism. His research also challenged the conventional wisdom that long-term thyroid hormone therapy shrinks thyroid nodules, changing medical practice. He was also one of the first to draw attention to the high prevalence of the incidentally discovered thyroid nodules, describing how to diagnose and manage them.
