Hoover Adger Jr MD, MPH, MBA

Dr. Hoover Adger Jr. is a professor of pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His clinical interests include adolescent medicine, substance abuse, and general pediatrics. Dr. Adger is the director of Adolescent Medicine in the Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, as well as the Director of the Leadership Education in Adolescent Health (LEAH) Program.

Dr. Adger is the director of both the Substance Abuse Assessment/Intervention Team at The Johns Hopkins Hospital Adolescent Program and the Johns Hopkins Substance Abuse Faculty Development Programs. He also serves as the faculty leader of the Colleges Advisory Program’s Sabin College.

He earned his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University. He completed a pediatrics residency at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and a fellowship in adolescent medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. He joined the Johns Hopkins faculty in 1984, at which time he completed an M.P.H. in health policy.

Dr. Adger served as deputy director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy in 1997 and 1998. He served from 1999-2005 as co-director of a federally funded strategic planning initiative, a role in which he advised the federal government and other entities about improving and expanding interdisciplinary education and training of health professionals in substance-use disorders.
