Hongbo Chi received his Ph.D. in pathology from the University of Rochester, New York, USA, in 2001. He then did his postdoctoral training in immunology with Dr. Richard Flavell at Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA, where he studied MAPK signaling and immune regulation. In 2007, he started his independent research program at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee, USA, where he is currently a member (professor) in the Department of Immunology.

His research focuses on molecular pathways in immune signaling and cell metabolism that control the differentiation and function of T cells, a central cell type in adaptive immunity. He is particularly interested in understanding mTOR signaling and associated metabolic pathways in effector and regulatory T cells. His work establishes the crucial importance of these pathways in the development, homeostasis, activation, and functional differentiation of various T cell subsets.
