Dr. Hiroshi Mitoma is the Chief Professor of the Department of Medical Education at Tokyo Medical University since 2018.

He graduated with MD in 1985 from the Faculty of Medicine of Tokyo Medical and Dental University, where he received a Ph.D. in 1989 (Prof. Y. Shinoda). He moved to the Department of Neurology of Tokyo Medical and Dental University in 1990, and to the Institute of Mitsubishi Life Sciences in 1995. He has been Director of the Mitoma Neurological Clinic from 1999 to 2009, Adjunct Professor of the Department of Medical Education, at Tokyo Medical University from 2006 to 2016, Professor of the Medical Education Promotion Center, at Tokyo Medical University from 2016-2018, and Director of Medical Education Promotion Center, Tokyo Medical University.

He has contributed particularly to research on 'immune-mediated cerebellar ataxias'. Using physiological methods, he has clarified pathomechanisms underlying anti-GAD65 antibody-associated cerebellar ataxias. He has also contributed to an establishment of a notion, 'Cerebellar reserve'.
