Hersh Chandarana MD

Dr. Hersh Chandarana, MD, is a highly respected physician-scientist, professor, and diagnostic radiologist at NYU Langone Health and the NYU Grossman School of Medicine in New York City, specializing in abdominal imaging and advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Dr. Chandarana serves as Vice Chair of Radiology Hospital Operations & Analytics and Co-Director for Clinical and Translational Research for NIH-funded imaging centers, where he leads efforts to enhance imaging quality, accessibility, and patient care through technological innovation.

He has over two decades of experience in abdominal and oncologic imaging, with a focus on developing, refining, and applying advanced MRI methods that improve image quality, especially in patients who cannot perform traditional breath-hold scans. His research has contributed to the development of pioneering motion-robust imaging techniques, such as Golden-Angle Radial Sparse Parallel (GRASP) and XD-GRASP, which are widely used to obtain high-resolution images despite patient motion. Dr. Chandarana earned his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from the New York University School of Medicine in 2002, completed his radiology residency in 2007, completed an MRI fellowship in 2008 at NYU, and is board-certified in Diagnostic Radiology by the American Board of Radiology.

In addition to his clinical and operational roles, he is an active researcher with hundreds of scientific publications, including studies advancing accelerated and free-breathing MRI, and he regularly leads clinical trials in imaging innovation. His contributions to the field were recognized in 2025, when he was named a Senior Fellow of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) for his work to make MRI more robust and accessible.
