Hermann Stefan is neurologist and epileptologist. His work is concentrated on the investigation of epilepsies, their diagnostics, differential typology, and therapeutic treatment. For this purpose, he increased the diagnostic possibilities of clinical application and subsequently specialized in the preoperative diagnosis in patients with therapy-resistant epilepsies. After his medical studies in Bonn/Germany, he absolved training and scientific projects in the field of presurgical diagnosis in patients with therapy-resistant epilepsies at the University of Bonn and at the Department of Clinical Neurophysiology and Epilepsy, McGill University Montreal/Canada in 1984, Department of Neurology of Cleveland Clinic Foundation in 1985, 1986 EEG-Department of Department of Neurology, University Clinic Zurich.

In 1987 he took up his position as Professor of Neurology at the University of Erlangen-Nurnberg and built up the Epilepsy Center Erlangen, a Grade IV center, the highest level of treatment capacity. He led many clinical trials, has organized a great number of German, European and international symposia and meetings, has received several distinguished awards, among them the award of the Medal of honor of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2001. He is a member and chairman of important neurological organizations and a member of the scientific board of many international journals.
