Dr. Virgin, is the Mallinckrodt Professor and Head of Pathology and Immunology at Washington University School of Medicine. His laboratory studies the host/pathogen/symbiote interface paying particular attention to mechanisms that operate in vivo. His lab discovered the first murine norovirus, cultured noroviruses for the first time, has identified the mechanisms of action of viral virulence factors and anti-viral immunity, and demonstrated that herpesviruses can confer mutualistic symbiotic advantages to their hosts by stimulating innate immune responses. The laboratory has contributed to defining the mammalian virome and the role of the virome in health and disease.

Dr. Virgin authored the chapter on viral pathogenesis in Field's Virology as well as reviews on the virome, AIDs, noroviruses, autophagy and virus-host interactions in Cell, Cell Host and Microbe, Nature, and Nature Immunology. He is a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association of Physicians, and the American Academy for Microbiology and serves on the Board of Reviewing Editors for Science, and the Editorial Boards of PLoS Biology, and Cell Host and Microbe. He has trained many established investigators and has served on more than 100 Ph.D or M.D./Ph.D thesis committees.
