Dr. Henry Longerich is a Professor at the Memorial University of Newfoundland. Longerich is an analytical chemist with a long record of distinguished service to Memorial as a member of the Department of Earth Sciences. He graduated from Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, in 1963 with a degree in chemistry. After completing his Ph.D. in analytical chemistry at Indiana University in Bloomington in 1967, he held the post of assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Alberta from 1967-72 and was a post-doctoral fellow from 1972-1974 at Dalhousie University, He came to Memorial University in 1975 and was a member of the Earth Sciences Department from 1978 to 1996 when he retired. Dr. Longerich's area of expertise is inorganic analytical chemistry. He has extensive experience in X-ray fluorescence, X-ray microprobe, thermal ionization mass spectrometry, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. He has a background in instrumental electronics and computer interfacing of various instruments. He has also published more than fifty research papers during his career. In 1996 Memorial named Dr. Longerich an Honorary Research Professor.

Dr. Longerich still holds grant funding from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, and, since his retirement, has continued to pursue his academic interests. He has been teaching and carrying out research in chemistry at the University of Alberta, at Memorial, and has recently undertaken work at Chemex Laboratories in Vancouver. He plans to continue teaching at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.
