Mr. Schuurman has been with Christian Health Care Center for 34 years, starting his career as a groundskeeper and subsequently being promoted to various director level positions and eventually Vice President. For the last eight years he has been responsible for capital projects and heads the project management and PDC function as Vice President of Facilities Development.

During his career, Mr. Schuurman has been responsible for additional functional areas as safety management, EOC compliance, and emergency management. Currently he is responsible for the Life safety chapter and manages the SOC and PFI process.

Mr. Schuurman enjoyed a parallel career as a member of the Army National Guard for 23 years. As a non-commissioned and later as a commissioned officer he again served in progressive positions from squad leader through Brigade staff officer.

Community involvement has included serving on youth and adoption agency boards, church service as elder and president of council, and mentoring with a local men’s group. Most recently he is heading a leadership training initiative in North Jersey.

Receiving a diploma in Facility Engineering from North Carolina State, most of his training was received either in the military or from involvement in ASHE. This included regular Annual Conference and PDC attendance. Course work in safety;, the environment of care construction management, and completion of the ASHE Leadership Institute round out what has been gained on the job.

Mr. Schuurman’s involvement in ASHE has increased over the years. This increased involvement began soon after joining the local chapter, the Healthcare Facilities Management Society of New Jersey. Seeking an assignment to the New Jersey Hospital Associations Engineering Advisory board and later chairing the board for 4 years. Successes on this board included advocacy initiative at the state level. Election to president elect and currently holding the office of chapter president. Honored in 2009 as the ASHE Region 2 Emerging Leader.
