Dr. Hemant Bhargav is currently working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Integrative Medicine at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), an Institute of National Importance, Bengaluru, India. He has a degree in conventional medicine (MBBS), Diploma in Community Mental Health, with MD & PhD in Yoga Therapy.
He worked as Assistant Professor and Yoga Therapy consultant at Swami Vivekananda Yoga University (S-VYASA), Bengaluru for 6 years after his MD. After that, he joined NIMHANS, Bengaluru as Senior Scientific Officer in the NIMHANS Integrated Centre for Yoga and continued for another 2 years. For the past 1 year, he is working at the Department of Integrative Medicine, NIMHANS as an Assistant Professor of Yoga.
His research areas of interest are Yoga therapy, Ayurveda, and Integrative Medicine and its applications in the field of mental health and neurosciences. He has more than 70 peer-reviewed research publications in these areas including two books.
He has been awarded the prestigious Wellcome Trust/India Alliance CPH Early Career Fellowship in 2021. He has received multiple grants from the Govt of India. Currently, he has two ongoing funded projects as Principal Investigator at NIMHANS: 1) Yoga for Opioid Dependence: efficacy and potential mechanisms (Funded by DST-SATYAM) and 2) Yoga for Type 2 Diabetes: an RCT with 1-year follow-up (Funded by DST-SERB). He is also the advisor to UGC under Research and Academics Task Force for Inter-university Centre for Yogic Sciences in India.
