Hemal Ariyaratne MBBS, MSC, MD(RES), MRCP, FRCR

Dr. Hemal Ariyaratne, MBBS, MSC, MD(RES), MRCP, FRCR qualified in medicine from the University of Colombo in 2004 with First Class Honours and 16 medals. He did a Master’s degree in Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London. Following core medical training in London and completion of MRCP in 2008, he was selected for clinical oncology training. He completed a postgraduate diploma in oncology at the Institute of Cancer Research in 2013. He completed his training in the London Clinical Oncology training program with completion of FRCR in 2013.

He was awarded a research fellowship in image-guided radiotherapy. His research thesis on cone beam CT optimization in radiotherapy was awarded a MD(Res) from University College London in 2018. It also led to peer-reviewed publications and conference awards from the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology, and the National Cancer Research Institute.

He is currently the principal investigator for clinical trials in lung radiotherapy and lower GI radiotherapy at the Royal Free Hospital. Research interests include stereotactic radiotherapy for lung cancer, immunotherapy integration with lung radiotherapy, and total neoadjuvant approaches to rectal chemoradiation.

His clinical practice specializes in lung and gastrointestinal cancers. He is the lead for stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SBRT) and quality indicator group at the Royal Free Hospital radiotherapy department.
