Dr. Kubista’s research interest focuses on the role of various ion channels in the electrical activities of nerve cells. The general aim of his work is to understand the implication of selected ion channels in normal and abnormal discharge activities and to assess potential targetability of these channels in neurological diseases. Currently Dr. Kubista’s group is investigating these questions with respect to L-type voltage-gated calcium channels. Using in vitro-models of epileptiform activity („epilepsy in the culture dish“) the group address whether these calcium channels can be used as targets for anti-epileptic or anti-epileptogenic therapy.
